Irish Pine (2) 1948-65 | Irish Pine (3) 1973-84 |
The MV IRISH PINE was a very popular ship when she sailed in the Irish
Shipping Ltd colours. Completed by Upper Clyde Ship Builders Ltd, Govan
(Yard Number 126) in 1973. She was sold for $3.9m in 1983. In the two black and white photos she is seen as the MV CHRISTINAKI arriving in Liverpool to load what turned out to be her last cargo. A few weeks later on the 1st February 1993, she foundered at sea in extremely bad weather south-west of Ireland. Onboard were five Greek officers and twenty two Filipino, none of whom survived. The cause of the accident was believed to be the forward hatch being blown off. in the appalling weather. A search, carried out by French and British aircraft, was called off on the 7th February 1993. Gerry McGovern March 2022 |
